Dr. Manny Bagary
About Manny
Dr. Manny Bagary is consultant epileptologist, somnologist and neuropsychiatrist. His medical training was in London, graduating from St Marys Hospital and Imperial College Medical School. His psychiatry training was on the Charing Cross and Maudsley rotations, London. He has held Wellcome Research Fellow posts at the MRC Cyclotron Unit, Imperial College and the Institute of Neurology, UCL/National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London completing a PhD in neurological sciences. His epilepsy training was at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and the National Society for Epilepsy.
Manny took a consultant post in Birmingham in 2004 and established a ketogenic diet service for adults with drug resistant epilepsy in 2009.
He is the lead consultant for a tertiary epilepsy and sleep service with a catchment area of 6 million for complex epilepsies and sleep disorders including video-telemetry; oPSG; MSLT; actigraphy; ambulatory EEG and respiratory recording; MRI, MRS; SPECT, PET and EEG_fMRI serving an epilepsy surgical programme, VNS clinic, adult ketogenic diet service, mental helath comorbidty in epilepsy, organic psychosis, brain injury, FND/dissociative disorders including NEAD, hypersomnias (eg narcolepsy); parasomnia’s (eg SWSD ;RSBD), circadian rhythm disorders and insomnias. He is an advanced CBTi therapist and an accredited TMS practitioner.
His research includes Phase II, III and IV studies and a HTA (co-applicant) multicentre study. Since 2004 he has been PI or CI for over 20 NIHR studies predominantly CTIMPs for epilepsy. Other research interests include utilisation of EEG_fMRI to investigate sleep disorders, novel treatments including antiepileptic drugs, ketogenic diet and surgical outcomes in drug-resistant epilepsy, standards of care in video-telemetry, epilepsy neuropsychiatry, NEAD and more recently PI for COVID studies in healthcare workers.
Dr. Bagary Peer has co-authored a number of peer-reviewed published guidelines including for ketogenic diet therapy in adults with drug resistant epilepsy, standards for buccolam training, the management of epilepsy in pregnancy and practice in UK epilepsy monitoring units.
