Periventricular Nodular Heterotopia (PVNH)

Periventricular nodular heterotopia (PVNH) is a brain malformation that starts in foetal development; affecting cortical development and characterised by neurons gathering within the brain's ventricles. In the typical brain development process, the neurons move from the ventricles to the surface of the brain. However, in PVNH, some cells fail to move in this way and form clusters around the ventricles instead. This leads to seizures and varying degrees of intellectual disability among the people affected.

World PVNH Disorder Awareness Day is on the 7th August each year. Learn more here.

PVNH Support & Awareness

PVNH Support & Awareness connects families together, advocates and educates patients, family members and medical professionals about Periventricular Nodular Heterotopia and other forms of neuronal heterotopia disorders. They also enable research studies to help improve diagnosis, care and treatments with the hope of one day finding a cure. Their goal is to positively impact the lives of affected individuals and their families.

Their vision is to create a world where no affected families are left to fend for themselves, where medical professionals can recognise the disorder, provide care to treat symptoms and improve quality of life, and where research enables genetic discoveries provide a faster diagnosis, improved care options and more efficient medical treatments.
