Autistic people are much more likely to have an epilepsy than those without (and vice versa). Regarding the former, statistic vary between 12.1% to nearly 50%!
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental dysfunction involving people’s social skills, speech, cognition, and behaviour. Like in people with an epilepsy though, autistic people vary greatly.
Again, like with epilepsy, many autistic people face discrimination and barriers across all sectors of society – in the health and social care systems, in education, in employment, and everywhere in between. So, it’s crucial that autistic people, and their families and carers, can access tailored information, guidance and support to overcome those barriers, along with opportunities to explore their interests, develop skills and build friendships for fulfilled lives.
Let’s support autistic people and their families for World Autism Acceptance Week!
